Cleaner using a water-fed pole to clean rooftop solar panels on a UK house

Solar panel cleaning in the UK typically costs £4 to £10 per panel, with most domestic jobs landing between £50 and £120 per visit and a common minimum charge of £45 to £60. A standard 10 to 12 panel domestic array usually sits around £60 to £100. Prices rise for steep roofs, three-storey properties, heavy moss or lichen, and ground-mounted arrays that need different access.

What changes the price

  • Panel count: the main driver, and the easiest thing to confirm before quoting.
  • Roof height and pitch: a bungalow is straightforward, a steep three-storey roof is not.
  • Soiling level: bird mess, lichen and farm dust take longer than a light dust film.
  • Access: scaffolding, tower or roof-safe access changes the job entirely.
  • Travel: rural single jobs need a higher minimum to be worth the diesel.

How often should panels be cleaned?

Once a year suits most UK homes. Twice a year is sensible under trees, near farmland, close to busy roads, or on shallow-pitch roofs where rain does not run off well. Panels are self-cleaning in theory only: in practice, dirt collects along the bottom edge of each panel where water pools.

Careful with output claims

Cleaning dirty panels usually restores lost output, but the gain depends entirely on how dirty they were. Quote the work, not a promised percentage. An inflated efficiency claim is the fastest way to lose a customer's trust.

How cleaners should price it

  1. Set a minimum call-out that covers travel and setup.
  2. Price per panel above that minimum, in bands rather than exact counts.
  3. Add a fixed access uplift for anything above two storeys.
  4. Add a soiling uplift for lichen or bird fouling, agreed before you start.
  5. Only ever use pure water and a soft brush: never detergents or anything abrasive on the coating.

Selling it to your existing round

Solar cleaning is the easiest add-on in the trade, because you already know which of your customers have panels. You have been looking at their roofs for years. Offer it as a yearly service alongside their window clean and it books itself.

If you quote online, add solar panel cleaning as a priced extra so customers can choose it themselves while they are already deciding.
